schools boycott artifacts

summary:
we began by comparing two images of nyc schools from the 1960s; one of a school for black children, the other of a school for white children. using these image, we discussed the disparities in the quality of facilities, materials, etc. this led into a larger discussion of de facto & de jure segregation, and the roles of income & other factors in creating school segregation. next, we looked at and discussed a series of images from the 1964 schools boycotts, and watched a new report covering the second, less successful, march 16 boycott.
