modern day slavery

summary:
we started by looking at an image that compares slavery in the 17th & 18th centuries with slavery today, and then, in order to recap what we've been learning and to truly appreciate the brutality and dehumanization of antebellum (pre civil war) american slavery, we watched a clip from the classic series roots which common scene of the period: the slave auction (watch here). next, we read about slavery around the world today (below; 'modern slavery'), and created venn diagrams comparing the two.

homework:
students were sent home with first-hand narratives of life as a slave today (below; 'slavery and human rights', pages 11-12), and a worksheet to complete based on that reading (not attached).
