mosl, part 1

summary:
we began by writing about what we think about standardized tests, and how they make us feel. after that, i reminded students that we would be taking a standardized test called the 'measure of student learning (mosl) performance assessment'. this exam is part of a new series of standardized tests that will be administered in all core subjects (ela, math, science, social studies) twice this year in all schools across new york city. they will be used to measure student growth, and to assess teacher performance. we discussed some of the potential pros and cons of such a system (see below), and then completed the first two parts of the test.

homework:
none.

potential pros:
  • gives some information about students and teachers
  • holds teachers accountable for good teaching
potential cons:
  • narrow focus on basic skills ignores the whole child
  • emphasis on punishment & test prep, not real learning
