pre-encounter geography

summary:
we began today by setting aside time for students to finish up the 'letter home' assessment that we had begun in class on monday. after that, we looked at a primary source - the enrollment tally for carlisle that shows what tribal group each of its students belonged to. after that, we went back in time to figure out where exactly those tribal groups were from. we looked at some maps of both european and indigenous american nations as they existed before europeans arrived in north america, and discussed study strategies for thursday's pre-encounter geography quiz. for the quiz, students must know the name & location of five european nations (portugal, spain, france, england, netherlands), and five indigenous nations (iroquois, algonquin, +3 of their choice) in order to earn a 3. they can go beyond mastery by learning up to five more of each.

bonus texts are available (below) for students who are ready to go above and beyond.
