historical accuracy

we began by listing three positive and three negative things about native american boarding schools; as expected, it was much easier to name the negatives. then we switched seats into new base groups and did a fact-finding dig into some extension resources about native american boarding schools. in a simple notecatcher, students wrote facts from the documents that they wanted to include in their letters home. after that we discussed some possible ways to include those facts in their writing, and once students had made a plan for each of the facts they returned to their writing. students wrote for about 20 minutes, pausing every 7 minutes for a quick check-in with a neighbor.
