belonging

summary
students wrote and talked about a time that they were either excluded from or included in a group, and how it felt. next, we reviewed the rudyard kipling poem "we and they", focusing on the main ideas that (1) people can be very different on the surface, and (2) we are all the same deep down. then, we discussed the very universal human need to belong and to be accepted by others. we read a story about a middle school student named eve, and what she did to "fit in". after that, we discussed the words upstander, bystander, victim and perpetrator, and the idea that often, people do things that they don't feel comfortable with in order to fit in to a a group - to belong.
