TIMELINE ANNOTATION EXEMPLAR

For the Quakers of 17th Century New Netherlands, Director-General Peter Stuyvesant was a tyrant. When he originally came to power he looked down upon their equality-centric Christian religion, and by 1657 he had made their religious meetings illegal in an attempt to force them to join the Dutch Reformed Church. Then things got even worse: in 1656 a man named Robert Hodgson was arrested and sentenced to two years of manual labor with slaves. His crime: preaching Quakerism.

In response, a group of non-Quaker activists in modern-day Vlissingen (Flushing) and Rustdorp (Jamaica) came together to express their disapproval of Stuyvesant’s religious intolerance. Their letter to the Director-General, known as the Flushing Remonstrance, is a bold call for kindness and religious inclusion, and is widely recognized as the inspiration behind the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of religion.

WHAT IS MY KID STUDYING?
The document below (click on it) is one way of explaining the big picture of US history @ MELS. It comes from a SS department work session last year, and shows the content & topics that emphasized in our current case studies, color-coded by Expedition.

As a department we are very pleased with both the depth & focus of our case studies and also their coverage - we think that whereas the state standards ask us to cover an incredibly broad range of topics, we've made the right choices in choosing what to spend our time on. We hope you'll agree, and look forward to hearing any feedback you have.

UPCOMING ASSESSMENTS
  • First Draft of "Wall of Heroes Proposal" due in class on Friday, 5/13!
  • Final Draft due Friday, 5/20.
